“I’ve got a strict ‘no reading the comments on social media rule,'” Cyrus, 25, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.
“I want them to stay in a confident mind frame and the quickest way to get out of one is to read some dumb comments from people who don’t have lives,” she says. “I always wonder who wants to write something to hurt someone. I guess you have to be willing to take all the hate for the positive of getting to perform.”
Cryrus’ fellow judge Adam Levine also has an opinion about Internet trolls.
“I have news for you,” the Maroon 5 frontman, 38, tells PEOPLE. “The same people who spit all this hatred out are the same ones who will be falling over themselves saying they love you. These people who are saying these things are literally people sitting, doing nothing who clearly hate themselves.”

He continues, “The one thing about social media nobody realizes is you’re making the elective decision to put something out there, so the minute you do that, you’re immediately susceptible to the bulls— that comes along with it. You cannot do that if you don’t have thick skin, which is totally admirable.”
To help ignore the haters, Cyrus recommends surrounding yourself with a strong support system. “Keep people around you who respect you and respect themselves,” she says. “And also know you can take it or leave it.”
