Mary J. Blige is baring her soul with her new music.

On Thursday night, the Grammy winner released her latest single, “Thick of It,” and the singer — who co-wrote the song — gets personal about the demise of a relationship.

“So tell me who / who’s gonna love you like I do / who will you trust / I gave you too much / enough is enough / now we’re in the thick of it,” sings Blige.

The musician filed for divorce earlier this summer from her manager husband Kendu Isaacs after 12 years of marriage. Though she hasn’t said the song was directly inspired by her relationship with Isaacs, Blige reveals the track is indeed “so personal” to her.

“It’s almost painful to let it out,” says Blige about the track in a press release. “I don’t hold back though, it’s not who I am and there’s no way I am going to start changing now.”

“We all deal with love and the emotions that we get tangled up in, and we gotta survive, grow and remain honest to our best selves,” continues Blige. “I feel that with this song and it’s the first one off this album I’ve been immersing myself in for two years now. Music saves me no matter what in life is happening.”

Blige will be performing new material off her upcoming album Strength of a Woman next month when she co-headlines the King + Queen of Hearts world tour with Maxwell.
