“There’s a lot of songs for this record,” he said. “I’ll put it this way, not to be overly cryptic … but there are more songs that can fit in your standard sized album.”
Fans should rejoice: He continued by saying that 2017 will bring “more music than I’ve ever put out in any one year.”
The singer also revealed a surprising tidbit about himself, telling fans he searches for himself online — through Instagram hashtags.
“I get the most flattered and moved when I look at Instagram hashtags,” he admits. “I feel like that’s a kinder, gentler Internet.”
The 39-year-old singer also talked about the story behind his curious Snapchat name, johnthekangaroo.
“I was working in the studio with somebody and they had guitar picks that had ‘John the Kangaroo,'” he said. “It’s from a misheard Muddy Waters lyric. I thought it was great.”
The “Gravity” singer has a new album, The Search for Everything, and that a tour would be coming in the spring.
As for the album title? He said it came from a poem he wrote, thinking it would later become a song.
“The record was about a love affair or obsession…with a certain style of music,” he elaborated. “The day you come online as a person with their own tastes in music, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do.”
“For me,” he adds. “I was always discovering music… as a listener and processing it as a writer.”
Mayer didn’t mention a release date for The Search for Everything, but he did give a hint, saying “very soon, I promise.” Either way, it looks like 2017 will be Mayer’s year.
