Gigi Hadid Is Rooting for Zayn Malik at the 2016 American Music Awards: ‘He Really Deserves Recognition’

Posted on

Gigi Hadid is just days away from taking the stage at the 2016 American Music Awards with co-host Jay Pharoah, but there’s one person she’ll be rooting for behind the scenes: her boyfriend, Zayn Malik.

“I don’t know if as a host I’m allowed to say who I’m voting for … but [I] voted for him,” Hadid told PEOPLE Nov. 9 at a press day for the AMAs.

Malik, 23, is nominated in the “New Artist of the Year” category alongside contenders Alessia Cara, The Chainsmokers, DNCE and Shawn Mendes.

“I think that he really deserves recognition for the music that he made this year,” Hadid says.

Though Malik shot to fame as a member of One Direction, it’s been over a year since he left the band to pursue a solo career. Malik released his debut solo album Mind Of Mine in March.

“It’s been amazing to kind of see him learn about himself and the music that makes him really happy to sing,” Hadid explains. “I would just be very excited for him if he were to win.”

The 21-year-old supermodel can’t contain her excitement for several other acts set to perform at the star packed awards show, including Ariana Grande, Sting and pop queen Lady Gaga.

“I love Gaga and I think that she always brings something with so much heart,” says Hadid. “I’m very excited to see what she has for us.”

This will be Hadid’s second time hosting a major awards show; she made her hosting debut at the Much Music Video Music Awards in Toronto earlier this year.

As someone who has strutted in countless runway shows, Hadid is no stranger to quick changes and says she wants to bring out as many outfits that make her really excited to put on over the course of the night.

As for what we can expect from her fashion-wise?

“I still haven’t had my fitting yet,” says Hadid. “I try not to kind of have a theme or one specific look that I’m going for just because I want it to be really eclectic and fun, kind of surprise people and be colorful and have cool textures.”

She explains, “That’s what a fun part about being a host is.”

The American Music Awards will air live on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m ET on ABC.
