Ed Sheeran is one of the biggest male pop stars in the world right now — and, yes, he too is a Britney stan!
The 26-year-old “Shape of You” singer has released a cover of Britney Spears‘ 1998 anthem “…Baby One More Time” as part of Spotify’s Singles program — reinventing the pop anthem into a stripped-down acoustic jam.
While Sheeran’s covered the track before, this is the first time he’s recorded a version of the tune — and boy, is it good. With the dance-floor fun of Spears’ jam out of the way, iconic lyrics like “my loneliness is killing me” sound intensely emotional in Sheeran’s raw voice. As if his loneliness might actually be killing him. (Don’t worry — Sheeran’s got a longtime girlfriend in Cherry Seaborn so he’s doing okay in the love department).
Recorded at Spotify’s New York City studios, Sheeran’s “…Baby One More Time” — available to stream exclusively on the platform — also comes with a Spotify-exclusive recording of his track “Castle On The Hill.”
It’s the 100th single to be released as part of Spotify’s Singles program — which kicked off last November and has featured standout covers such as John Legend‘s soulful rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and Clean Bandit’s upbeat take on Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home.”

And while “…Baby one More Time” may leave Sheeran fans eager for more, the singer — who has plenty of covers to explore in the depths of YouTube — is just getting started.
After taking the first hiatus of his career recently, Sheeran recently told Entertainment Weekly he’s “totally refreshed and rejuvenated” and ready for his new tour.
“Production is definitely bigger this time around,” Sheeran said, previewing the run which hits North America on June 29. “I’d like to think that it’s sounding better too. I have a new loop station that can handle a bit more. But ultimately, it’s still just me, my guitar, and the looper. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.”
