Chris Cornell Closed His Final Performance with a Cover About Death: ‘I Want Nobody to Mourn’

Posted on

Chris Cornell played his final, sold-out performance with band Soundgarden on Wednesday night in Detroit, just hours before he was found dead by suicide in his hotel room after the show — and ended the show with a song about death.

The 52-year-old rocker, who first gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later the band Audioslave, ended the set with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “In My Time of Dying,” CNN reports.

“In my time of dying, I want nobody to mourn/All I want for you to do is take my body home,” Cornell sang.

Cornell died of suicide by hanging at MGM Grand Detroit following the band’s performance at the Fox Theatre, PEOPLE confirms.

“Chris Cornell passed away late Wednesday night in Detroit, Michigan,” Cornell’s rep said in a statement. “His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause. They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”

“Chris seemed in really great spirits and everyone is in complete shock,” a friend of the rocker and wife Vicky who saw them recently told PEOPLE.

The Fox Theatre tweeted images of Cornell and his electrified crowd, hands outstretched toward the singer as he played hits like “Spoonman” and “Fell On Black Days.”

The singer’s last tweet had announced his return to “Rock City” Detroit.

During the performance, he showed more love for the city and its fans, overheard in a fan clip saying, “I have bragged about Detroit crowds for 30 years, so stand the f— up and make some noise.”

Of Cornell’s famed vocal range, a fan wrote with his clip, “He’s still got it.”

In his final social media post, Cornell quoted his own lyrics to “By Crooked Steps,” writing, “I’m the shape of the hole inside your heart.”
