Singer-songwriter Brooke Hummel is ready to make her mark on the world. The 16-year-old Florida native dropped her debut EP this week, The Brooke Hummel EP, which displays her pop and country sound.
Hummel spoke with PEOPLE NOW about her younger siblings, diet and celebrity crush. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming songstress:
1. Brooke and her family are from Puerto Rico.
Many of Hummel’s family members were originally born in Puerto Rico, and then made the move over to the Sunshine State.
2. There will be a 17-year age gap between Brooke and her youngest sibling.
Hummel has 8 year old and 3 year old sisters, with another sibling on the way! This makes the age gap 17 years between Hummel and her youngest sibling — and she says it’s still a surprise whether it will be a boy or girl yet.
“They’re my world,” says Hummel. “I love my siblings.”
3. Brooke has a “little sister” in Africa.
The singer is a big sister in more ways than you’d think.
Through Metro Kids Africa, Hummel was paired with a pen pal who she writes back and forth to and shares “some really cool stories” with. Their relationship has even evolved to the point that they Skype all the time.
“There’s a lot of hardships over there so we’re able to share different stories,” says Hummel. “I do my best to tell her all of the positive things that I can.”
Hummel’s “little sister” hopes to be coming to America soon to explore and see how life is over here.
4. Brooke sticks to a raw food based diet.
Hummel is extremely conscious about what she puts into her body.
“Whenever I’m in the store I’m always turning boxes and labels over and making sure there’s no artificial colors, artificial flavors,” she explains.
5. Brooke has a huge crush on Shawn Mendes and would love to work with him.
Hummel reveals she’s currently crushing on none other than “Treat You Better” singer Shawn Mendes, and would love to work with him one day. Can you blame her? The 18-year-old Canadian singer’s second album recently Illuminate topped the charts.
“He’s actually the biggest artist that I would like to collaborate with just because I’m so already in love with all of his stuff that he does,” says Hummel.
Hummel has been a fan of Mendes since his early days of only posting covers on YouTube.
She adds: “I’ve seen him grow so I think working with him would be really awesome.”
