In an interview with InStyle magazine, Saldana said she tried to talk her husband out of taking her surname.
“I told him, ‘If you use my name, you’re going to be emasculated by your community of artists, by your Latin community of men, by the world,’ ” she told the magazine.
Now, Saldana is setting the record straight in a Facebook post, telling fans she is actually “proud” her husband took her last name. Initially, the Guardians of the Galaxy star had hesitations about Marco’s decision but he didn’t “give a shhheeeetttt,” she writes.
In the post, Saldana reveals her husband asked her, “What are you so afraid of?” which in turn made her wonder, “What am I so afraid of?”
Now the 36-year-old actress wants men everywhere to know they “will not cease to exist by taking your partner’s surname.” Instead, Saldana says they will be “remembered as a man who stood by change.”
“Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname,” Saldana adds.
Men, she explains, need to think outside of the box or remove it altogether so they can “redefine masculinity.”
“A real ‘man’ leads along side his partner. A real man accepts his mortality. A real man acknowledges that nothing can be done alone,” Saldana says.

With all the attention surrounding her initial remark, the star hopes the topic will inspire people to let go of “some of the limitations we have inherited from the past, and forge a new path moving forward,” she writes.
