“Do you ever feel like your life has turned into something you never intended?”

That’s the question Amy Adams‘ character asks in Nocturnal Animals – the highly anticipated second feature film from fashion designer-turned-director Tom Ford.

PEOPLE has the exclusive premiere of the thriller’s first trailer.

An adaptation of Austin Wright’s 1993 novel Tony and Susan, Nocturnal Animals tells the story of a woman (Adams) who confronts the demons of her past while reading a dark novel written by her ex-husband (Gyllenhaal). As she gets deeper into its story, she wonders whether the tale actually might be a revenge fantasy that alludes to their painful real-life breakup.

“My ex-husband used to call me a nocturnal animal,” Adams says in the intense clip. “I’ve been thinking about him a lot lately. And then recently he sent me this book that he’s written. It’s violent and it’s sad and he dedicated it to me.”

“I did something horrible to him,” she adds, mysteriously.

“Nobody gets away with what she did,” Gyllenhaal can be heard saying at the trailer’s end. “Nobody.”
