A new trailer for the highly anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story debuted on Thursday on Good Morning America, giving fans a glimpse into Jyn Erso’s past — and her complicated relationship with her father.
The trailer begins with Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) comforting his young daughter as Imperial forces advance on a farm.
“Jyn, whatever I do, I do it to protect you,” he says, before an adult Jyn (Felicity Jones) wakes up in a prison cell.
Once Jyn breaks out of prison with the help of Alliance forces and learns her father is “critical to the development of the super weapon,” her new task becomes clear: She must join the rebellion, find her father and infiltrate the Death Star before its first weapons test.
“Rebellions are built on hope,” she vows.
With that, the unlikely team of heroes known as Rogue One is formed.
Rogue One is the first of several upcoming spin-offs that exist within the familiar Star Wars universe, but take place outside the regular film series. Directed by Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards, Rogue One is set shortly before the events of the original 1977 Star Wars: Episode IV.
Along with the trailer, Edwards also released new poster art for the film, which shows off the main cast of characters with Darth Vader looming in the shadows.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will arrive in theaters on Dec. 16.
