James Franco has some regrets in his life.

The actor appears on the cover of Variety‘s latest issue for his starring in and directing The Disaster Artist. The interview finds him more reflective as he approaches his 40th birthday next year.

When it comes to relationships, Franco admits that he’s working harder on being there for his current girlfriend, Isabel Pakzad, than he was with an ex.

“There was one instance, this old girlfriend was visiting me in New York,” Franco says. “I had come out here for school. My cat had scratched her in the eye. I had so much work to get done for the next day, I didn’t take her to the hospital. I had my assistant take her. That moment haunted me so much. What kind of selfish, self-centered boyfriend are you?”

But the movie star is already doing better. According to the outlet, he accompanied Pakzad to the hospital in September when she developed a serious throat infection.

Franco also opens up about his decision to quit Instagram in an effort to reevaluate the role fame plays in his life.

“It’s very liberating,” Franco says. “I just got rid of it. When I first got on, it just felt silly. I treated it like it was a joke. You get in that weird seductive space where it feels private, but it’s also public. And you get hooked on the reaction.”

The Disaster Artist — also starring his brother Dave and Alison Brie — hits theaters Dec. 1.
