Apparently, only a handful of emojis can make it into the ultra-posh “frequently used” section of a smartphone.
The highly anticipated Emoji Movie unlocks a never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone — and PEOPLE has an exclusive clip of the upcoming animated film.
In the scene, everyone’s favorite emojis are seen hanging out in the lavish “frequently used” lounge, complete with cocktails and music — but not everyone is allowed inside.
“Come on man, it’s Hi-5, you know me. I’m a favorite!” pleads the hand emoji (voiced by James Corden) to the bouncer of the lounge. “It’s got to be some kind of mistake.”
When the fistbump emoji walks in without a problem, Hi-5 can barely stand it.
“He’s a knucklehead — literally!” he says as he tries to contort his body into the popular greeting.
The Emoji Movie follows the beloved smartphone emoticons, who live in the digital city of Textopolis. All the emojis in town have only one facial expression, except for Gene (T.J. Miller), who was born without a filter and boasts multiple expressions. Determined to fit in with his uni-emotional peers, Gene and his friends embark on an epic adventure through the apps on the smartphone in search of the code that will fix him.
Also starring Anna Faris (Jailbreak), Maya Rudolph (Smiler), Patrick Stewart (Poop), Sofia Vergara (Flamenca), Christina Aguilera (Akiko Glitter) and Jake T. Austin (Alex), the film is no doubt hoping fans will give it two emoji-thumbs-up.
The Emoji Movie, from Sony Pictures Animation, hits theaters July 28.
