There are two new Wimpy Kids in town!
PEOPLE is pleased to introduce Jason Drucker and Owen Asztalos, aka the new Greg Heffley and Rowley Jefferson for the next installment of FOX’s film franchise, based on Jeff Kinney’s bestselling book series.
Drucker, 10, and Asztalos, 11, beat out more than 2,000 kids for the coveted roles of Greg and Rowley in the fourth installment of the franchise, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. Director David Bowers called them separately via Skype to personally deliver the big news and thanks to wonders of modern technology, you can see from their reactions in the video that both young actors were very very excited to hear the news.
“Casting is so critical to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, and we left no stone unturned in finding the right actors to step into the shoes of Greg Heffley and Rowley Jefferson,” said author Jeff Kinney. “Over 2,000 kids auditioned for the part of Greg alone. Everyone feels great about Jason and Owen, and we’re incredibly excited to get started.”
In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, Greg convinces his family to take a road trip to attend his great grandmother’s 90th birthday as a cover for what he really wants: to attend a nearby gamer convention. Unsurprisingly, things do not go according to plan and Heffley family antics ensue.
“I’m thrilled we’re in a position to make another Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie,” added Kinney. “I wrote The Long Haul with a film in mind, taking the lessons I learned from the first three movies. The action and comedy are over the top, and our aim is to make an epic family road trip movie.”
