Charlize Theron Fights for Love and Justice in First Trailer for Director Sean Penn's The Last Face

Charlize Theron and Sean Penn may no longer be a couple, but their on-screen collaboration lives on in the upcoming war drama The Last Face, whose first trailer debuted Friday.

In the film, which Penn directed, Theron stars as a relief worker in war-torn Liberia, as she struggles to fight for her romance with a relief-aid doctor (Javier Bardem) amid a backdrop of escalating violence and turmoil.

As the bloodshed reaches a fever pitch, the two must decide how to best help those caught in the crossfire, while mapping out the course of their own relationship.

The Last Face is Penn’s fifth feature-length directorial effort and also stars Jared Harris, Adele Exarchopoulos and Jean Reno.

It debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it was met with less than stellar reviews as ex-couple Theron and Penn jointly promoted the film at panel talks and photo calls.

The film has yet to lock down a release date, but is expected to arrive in theaters in 2017.
