Have you ever wanted to fight alongside your favorite Star Wars characters as they zoom through space and battle the Empire? Well, your dream just became a (virtual) reality.

Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB has teamed up with Verizon to take fans deeper inside the Star Wars universe with a new virtual reality experience, Rogue One: Recon — A Star Wars 360 Experience

ILM

Rogue One: Recon places you in the pilot seat of a Rebellion X-wing fighter. With only your R2 unit and wingman at your side, you dodge enemy fire and get up close to the Death Star.

The team at Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB developed Rogue One: Recon 360 as a way to showcase what’s possible with 360-degree video and to get fans excited about the upcoming release of the film,” says Kristin Rooney, executive director of Partnerships & Social Media at Verizon. “You’re able to look around and truly dive into the Star Wars universe.”

Check out the 360° video above, explorable by clicking and dragging your mouse across the screen. For a fully immersive virtual-reality experience using VR goggles, download the LIFE VR app for iOS and Android or visit time.com/lifevr. (Don’t have goggles? They’re included in PEOPLE’s new special issue, Star Wars: The Secrets of Rogue One, at newsstands now! Click here for an easy guide on how to assemble them.) The experience is also available in Verizon stores across the nation with Samsung Gear VR headsets.

It’s an entirely different way to connect with the amazing world of Star Wars and to get ready for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” adds Rooney.

That’s not the only virtual-reality excitement created by the minds behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In an interactive experience available exclusively from PEOPLE, you can visit the movie’s set and go behind the scenes of a battle between rebels and stormtroopers — as director Gareth Edwards reveals secrets behind the movie. Check out the 360° video below and download the LIFE VR app for the full virtual-reality experience.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters Dec. 16.
