Emma Stone and new boyfriend Dave McCary might be keeping their budding romance mostly under wraps, but a source tells PEOPLE that the Saturday Night Live director is a great match for the La La Land star
“Dave has this core of kindness and sweetness,” the source says of the two-time Emmy nominee. “He’s tall and fit, confident and funny. He’s not someone who seeks the spotlight.”
McCary hails from San Diego, Calif. and has been best friends with SNL star Kyle Mooney since sixth grade. While attending USC, he and Mooney co-founded the comedy troupe Good Neighbor with fellow future SNL cast member Beck Bennett and Nick Rutherford, which brought them to the attention of the long-running comedy sketch show’s producers. They joined the show for its 39th season in 2013, on which McCary works as a segment director.
“He’s never wanted to be famous himself, he’s wanted to showcase his funny friends and make work that lets him hang out with them,” says the source. “Even in party situations he’s low-key and doesn’t crave attention and is okay bouncing and doing something more chill. I could definitely see how that would be appealing to someone like Emma. He’s just a great, cute, talented guy.”
In July, Stone attended the premiere of McCary’s feature directorial debut Brigsby Bear (starring Mooney). The pair were spotted as part of a group that left the Los Angeles event together.
Prior to McCary, Stone was in a relationship with Andrew Garfield, from whom she split in 2015 after almost four years of dating.
