In a new exclusive clip of Nate & Jeremiah: By Design, the decorating dads take a page out of the Hoarders‘ playbook and ask their client to get rid of a ton of clutter — and raise some money for her redesign — by hosting a garage sale.

But filling the driveway with cast-offs won’t cut it for Brent and Berkus. “We arrived and everything was like this big jumbled mess,” says Berkus. “It’s important to set it up like your own mini department store.”

Arranging furniture pieces into room vignettes allows shoppers to imagine the sellers’ items in their own homes — a process Brent dubs “accessorized to sell.” They also recommend organizing items by theme and type, keeping all home decor, kids toys, and clothes in separate areas.

The designers make a point in the new TLC series, to not only redecorate homes but share some major renovation lessons to help homeowners avoid getting into a money-pit project, like not swinging that sledge hammer before you know how to put back what you knock down.
