“I feel like home and work balance is an ever evolving process. Most importantly, wherever I am, I know I need to give 100 percent of myself,” admits actress, mom and businesswoman, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Gellar and her business partner, Galit Laibow — the pair launched Foodstirs, a line of organic baking mixes and kits, in 2015 — got real about balancing the demands of work and motherhood while speaking at Create & Cultivate, a conference for women entrepreneurs, in Atlanta on Saturday.

“[It’s] not easy and sometimes it’s rather messy,” Laibow, who founded a PR firm before becoming Foodstirs’ CEO, tells PEOPLE. “It doesn’t look like photos on Instagram!” Instead, she says, “It’s a constant trade off: come home early to have dinner and then stay up way too late finishing work. However, I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Gellar, 39, whose title at the e-commerce upstart according to LinkedIn is cofounder and Chief Mom, offers up her personal practice for creating balance: “Wherever I am, I know I need to give 100 percent of myself,” she says. “When I am at home, I need to put the phone down and be focused, and when I am at work, that deserves my undivided attention.” She also offers reveals one practice that could be a mantra for all multitasking moms: “I also need to acknowledge that I am only human, and at times I am spread too thin and need to give myself a moment of down time.”

The actress has two children, Charlotte, 7, and Rocky, 4, with husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., who is also breaking into the food world with a cookbook, Back to the Kitchen: 75 Delicious, Real Recipes (& True Stories) from a Food-Obsessed Actor.

She admits it’s difficult for a “type A personality like myself,” and that working from home can be problematic, but not for the reason you might think. “It can prove incredibly challenging when my kids are at home. They are truly respectful of my working. It’s me who wants to know what they are doing and join them.”
