MDLNY’s Ryan and Emilia Serhant Were Hesitant to Film Their Wedding: ‘I Was Concerned About the Over-Exposure'

Planning a wedding is hard enough. Add in a TV crew, and it’s a whole different story.

Million Dollar Listing: New York‘s Ryan Serhant and wife Emilia felt that double dose of stress when they signed on for a Bravo series that documents their wedding journey from the planning process through the week-long celebration in Greece. Although Ryan was on board from the beginning, Emilia definitely had her doubts.

“She hesitated all the way up until the wedding,” Serhant tells PEOPLE of wife Emilia’s thoughts on filming Million Dollar Listing New York: Ryan’s Wedding, premiering Thursday. “I think she was hesitating through the wedding, there was a lot of hesitation.”

“It’s very, very different from filming or being on TV partially on MDL. This was going to be very intimate, very personal,” Emilia says. “I think I was concerned about the over-exposure, and I’m not really that good with cameras. But in retrospect I’m really glad that we have this little piece of history.”

While the show will highlight all the memories Emilia and Ryan want to remember, it will also include the step the couple found to be the hardest: knowing where to start with the wedding planning.

“People kept talking to us as if we’d done this before,” Serhant, 32, says. “I kept telling people, ‘this is our first and hopefully last wedding so talk to us like we’re five years old.’”

On top of all the normal nuptial madness, the couple also added another layer of difficulty by choosing to have a destination wedding in Corfu, Greece — a decision that, while stressful, Ryan and Emilia say they would definitely do again.

“Everyone is just so excited to be in Greece on an island hanging out taking photos of the sunset and eating octopus, no one noticed or cared that there weren’t enough table settings or that the dessert was the wrong dessert,” Ryan says.

The week-long celebration also offered the couple the opportunity to spend time with everyone who attended, and for their loved ones to get to know each other. “We were really lucky that everybody really bonded,” Emilia says. “Now everybody’s friends, our families have each other on Whatsapp and they text each other on a daily basis.”

Now that they’re seasoned wedding planning pros, they both have advice to pass on to their fellow first-timers.

“No matter what, you will stress. Things will go wrong,” Emilia says. “Just enjoy it. Enjoy every moment and soak it up.”

Ryan’s words of wisdom to his fellow grooms? “Remember that the wedding has absolutely nothing to do with you, whatsoever,” he says with a laugh. “Nobody cares about you, it’s all about her. Do not forget it or forever hold your peace.”

Million Dollar Listing New York: Ryan’s Wedding premieres on Thursday, September 22 at 9PM ET/PT on Bravo.
