Christina Applegate won’t hesitate to share that until very recently, her kitchen was just about the opposite of camera ready.
“It was god awful. The ugliest kitchen. Of anyone that I know,” she says for starters. Dated beige cabinets, a clunky over-size range hood and an uncomfortable breakfast nook were not meeting the needs of the Bad Moms star, 44. But the actress, and real-life mom to five-year-old daugther, Sadie, was far too busy to take on a full-blown remodel of the busiest room in her home. So it stayed in its rather frumpy state…for 20 years.
When the home was damaged in a recent flood, however, a major renovation went from far-off luxury to absolute necessity. “We thought, while we’re going to have to rip up every bit of flooring in the whole house, we might as well do the kitchen,” Applegate says.
She began by teaming up with Laurel & Wolf designer Jessica Today, who helped the actress craft a fully functioning family hub. They coated the dull space in fresh white paint, paired with rich, dark-wood floors and upgraded to glossy modern cabinetry. Today also helped the star carve out clutter-curbing spaces, including a drop zone for keys and mail by the door and a kid-friendly mud room that helps Applegate uphold her strict “no shoes” policy.
The dining area also got a brilliant reboot, including a sputnik-inspired pendant light and tufted banquette seating. Applegate’s review? “It’s a place now where we can celebrate as opposed to a place that we want to get out of as fast as possible.”
