Reese Witherspoon Shares Her Two Secrets for Throwing a Great Party, 'Even If the Food Is Bad!'

Reese Witherspoon’s recipe for a successful party includes a few to-be-expected elements — but the thing she says you can do without, well that’s a bigger surprise.

“Great drinks and good music are all you need,” the Big Little Lies actress tells Martha Stewart Weddings’ editor-at-large, Darcy Miller. “Even if the food is bad! If the music is good and the drinks are flowing, everyone is happy.”

The lifestyle entrepreneur founder, 41, hosts her fair share of parties — most often “in the backyard with barbecue” — that channel her southern roots. Her favorite soiree that she’s put together, though, was for her 40th birthday.

“It was New Orleans-themed, with mint-julep cups and a second-line band. I got to share my southern upbringing with all of my favorite people,” Witherspoon says.

As an entertaining vet, it’s no surprise that Witherspoon is introducing a wedding collection to her Draper James’ line of home décor and clothing. Complete with trinket trays, totes, champagne flutes and more, Witherspoon ensures engagement parties and bridal showers are even more Insta-worthy.

“There’s a lot to celebrate when it comes to weddings,” she says. “So we created gifts to honor all the special moments and people involved.”

And if you’re gearing up to plan an event of your own, you can thank the actress for revealing this incredibly easy tip: “I love a garden theme,” she says. “Hosting outside takes the pressure off having your house look perfect — you can let Mother Nature do all the work!”
