Million Dollar Listing New York's Ryan Serhant Shares Emotional Story of his Rough Rise to Fame

Ryan Serhant is taking an emotional trip down memory lane.

The Million Dollar Listing New York cast member shared a post on Instagram on Thursday celebrating wrapping the first installment of his spinoff series Sell It Like Serhant, and reflecting on his rough rise to fame.

“When I first came to New York, before I got into real estate, I was incredibly self conscious and shy,” Serhant wrote. “I was overweight. I had terrible skin. I stared at the ground when walking around so I didn’t have to make eye contact with people.”

Because he had yet to hit it big, the Bravo star recalled, “I would tell friends I was busy just so I didn’t have to go out or spend money I didn’t have.”

Things hit rock bottom one day when he was “feeling really bad about myself.”

“I went to the grocery store. I got a week’s worth of food and put them on the checkout counter, and my credit card was declined,” he said. “I didn’t have cash or any other cards, and I was in between job payments. It was humiliating, and there was a line of people behind me staring. So I just said I would come back and I left. I ran actually.”

Although he was “holding back tears,” on the subway home, Serhant took the opportunity to make a big change.

“Instead of feeling bad for myself, I made a decision that day — that no matter what — I was never going to feel that way ever again,” he said. “Starting that day, I was going to work my a** off, somehow some way, and I would get myself as far away from the broke and insecure person I was, sitting on that train.”

After climbing the ranks in the luxury real estate world, landing his spot on MDLNYwhich finished its sixth season in August — and most recently completing his solo show, it’s safe to say Serhant achieved his goal and then some. But hitting it big wasn’t the only priority for the 33-year-old, who married his wife Emilia Bechrakis in July 2016.

“I made a promise to myself that one day, I wanted to be successful enough to help others, who felt like I did on that train, reach their true potential and see that when there’s a will to succeed,” he said. “And that’s this show…with a little of my crazy humor, I’m helping sales people who are down on their luck and about to be fired, learn the most valuable tool anyone can have: how to sell. Because when you can sell, you can do anything.”

Sell It Like Serhant premieres in Spring 2018 on Bravo.
