“I love all-you-can-eat buffets,” she tells Traditional Home in their May issue, “and I can’t live without my eyeliner.”
Her penchant for a smokey eye aside, the HGTV star’s real must-have is her tight-knit family. The designer, her husband Chip and their four children, Emmie, Ella, Drake and Duke even spend traditionally grown-up occasions together.
“Since Chip and I try to go on a date night once a week, we don’t feel the need to keep holidays like Valentine’s Day all to ourselves,” Gaines, 39, says. “We set the table fancy, we get all dressed up, and we serve a big, beautiful candlelight dinner.” She adds, “I’ll never forget one year we served lobster and Chip chased all the kids around the house with a lobster. It was hilarious!”

Gaines also opened up to the mag about her more material obsessions. If her storage bins full of flea market finds didn’t tip fans off, the home design guru admits that she can’t quite quit collecting antique tea cups, glassware and lots of plants.
“So much so that Chip calls me a hoarder,” she says.
Despite her success in transforming those cast-offs into stunning farmhouse-style decor for millions of fans, Gaines’ life motto remains as modest as when she was just a normal mom living in Waco, Texas.
“Don’t try to please the crowd,” she advises. “Always trust your instincts and go with your gut.”
