“There’s a lot of hair on HGTV now. Once upon a time, I was the guy with hair. It’s not as special anymore,” Scott McGillivray laments. But the Income Property star stands by the network he’s been a part of since 2008, despite the growing competition from well-tressed colleagues like Drew and Jonathan Scott and Chip and Joanna Gaines.
After getting his start on the first-generation home makeover show Debbie Travis’s Painted House, McGillivray, 39, landed his own series and hasn’t slowed down since — taking on spin-offs (Buyers’ Boot Camp, Moving the McGillivrays) and judging gigs (Flipping the Block, Canada’s Handyman Challenge) all while landing a PEOPLE’s Sexy Man of the Week award in the process.
Despite his success, the real estate expert and Owners.com spokesperson is still humbled by his die-hard fans.
Of the encounter that left the biggest impression on him, he recalls, “This guys just froze in front of me and he just came over and he said, ‘Ten years ago, my wife and I lost everything, and we saw you working on some brownstones. My wife and I bought and renovated five of them. We are multimillionaires right now. So we always say, “Whenever we meet Scott, we have to thank him,”‘” he says.
