Good Morning America chief meteorologist Ginger Zee and her husband, NYC newsman Ben Aaron, weren’t exactly prepared for the struggles of remodeling their suburban New York home.
Although Zee had some previous experience renovating properties with her parents as a kid, Aaron embarked on the process with a slight naiveté.
“I figured that if you want to renovate a house a couple of twins come and do it for you,” he tells PEOPLE, making reference to Property Brothers stars Drew and Jonathan Scott.“I didn’t realize how it works, so I didn’t have any hesitations.”
He quickly learned that it took “an extraordinary amount of work and frustration,” to transform their 1,800-square-foot fixer upper into a three-bedroom, three-bathroom dream home that was a better fit for the couple and their one-year-old son, Adrian, than their small city apartment.

“Moving from the city, of course everybody wants more space,” Zee says. “But I think having a lawn and a neighborhood for Adrian to grow up in was most important.”
The ups and downs of the process, which included everything from building bookshelves to removing asbestos in a window, are all documented in the family’s new DIY Network show, Renovation Realities: Ben & Ginger. And while it was certainly stressful, Zee and Aaron are confident the end result will be worth the watch.
“I find home renovations almost traumatic,” Zee says. “But people can create something great.”
Renovation Realities: Ben & Ginger premieres May 6th at 8:00 p.m. EST on DIY Network.
