An American Airlines flight en route to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from Chicago O’Hare was forced to make an emergency landing at DuPage Airport in Illinois due to smoke in the cockpit and cabin on Monday morning.
The flight, operated by the regional SkyWest Airlines, touched down safely at around 9:15am at the West Chicago airport and all 54 passengers on board were safely evacuated, according to ABC Chicago.
“SkyWest flight 2936, operating as American Eagle from Chicago O’Hare to Cedar Rapids, Iowa diverted to Dupage, Illinois, after reports of smoke in the cockpit. The flight landed safely and passengers deplaned normally. Mechanics will inspect the aircraft and we are working to help passengers resume their travels as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson for SkyWest, who operated the flight, tells PEOPLE in an email.
The representative also confirmed that there were “no injuries reported” and that “the passengers were transported back to O’Hare via bus.”
One passenger, Nick Ludwig, has been documenting the ordeal, posting videos on the plane and in the aftermath on Twitter.
In the video, passengers appear calm, though smoke can be seen in the cabin. According to another video posted by Ludwig, the flight attendant on board, who was working her first solo flight, initially told passengers the smoke was “mist.” The SkyWest spokesperson confirms to PEOPLE there was no fire.
“We took off from O’Hare. Everybody started immediately noticing smoke. The flight attendant . . . it was her first ever flight on her own — and she announces that it was mist. Immediately, everyone pretty much started to panic, and said ‘no, this isn’t mist,'” he says in one video recorded on the tarmac at DuPage. “Thankfully the pilot turned us around and we made an emergency landing at DuPage Airport.
After returning to O’Hare, Ludwig also reported the airline is offering passengers a $200 voucher.
American Airlines faced criticism earlier this month when a video of a flight attendant was seen “violently” taking a stroller from a mother was shared on Facebook. The flight attendant has been removed from duty and American issued a statement that they are investigating the event: “The actions of our team member captured here do not appear to reflect patience or empathy, two values necessary for customer care. In short, we are disappointed by these actions. The American team member has been removed from duty while we immediately investigate this incident,” the airline said.
