We always thought that taco shells were impossible to improve upon, but maybe shell-shaped fried chicken is the perfect vehicle for taco goodness.
According to GrubGrade, Taco Bell is testing the Naked Crispy Chicken Chalupa — a chalupa made with a fried chicken shell — in select markets, including Lawrence, Kansas.
While we’re a bit scandalized by the sight of it, we’re not surprised; last year, Taco Bell tested a taco with a fried chicken shell, so we’ve had some time to adjust to the concept. Of course, we can’t forget the sandwich that started it all: KFC’s Double Down sandwich, which is served between slices of fried chicken. (Also, never forget the Double Down hot dog. R.I.P.)
The new chalupa could not have come at a better time, as we try to get in shape for summer by cutting down on bread and carbs. (Taco shell = carb. Fried chicken = protein.)
This isn’t the first time that Taco Bell has toyed with non-traditional taco shells. In 2014, they put the Waffle Taco on their breakfast menu (it is sadly no longer), and last year, they released the Biscuit Taco and Doritos Loco.

Our fingers are crossed that the Naked Crispy Chicken Chalupa goes national. Until then, we’ll attempt to create our own versions at home.
