UPDATE: New Orleans police arrested 21-year-old Euric Cain for the shooting of Peter Gold and he allegedly confessed to the crime, New Orleans police chief Michael Harrison said at a press conference. Harrison said that Cain ‘was arrested without incident and has given our detectives a full confession about the incident.’

New Orleans mayor Mitch Landreau said Cain ‘will likely spend the rest of his life in jail. And what a waste it is.’

A Tulane University medical student was shot in the stomach after trying to help a woman seemingly being kidnapped into an SUV early Friday morning and New Orleans Police are searching for the alleged triggerman.

Surveillance footage of the incident in New Orleans shows Peter Gold, a 25-year-old fourth-year medical student, narrowly escaped the ordeal with his life. Gold is in critical condition at a New Orleans hospital, according to a police statement obtained by PEOPLE.

In the video, a man police said is Euric Cain, 21, is seen forcing a woman down a sidewalk towards an SUV. A car pulls up next to the SUV, and Gold exits, walking out of the camera’s view.

Seconds later, Gold walks back into the frame – with his arms up. The suspect has his gun aimed at the med student and the two exchange words.

The suspect fires a single shot to Gold’s torso. Gold falls to the ground and writhes in pain on the sidewalk, clutching his stomach.

The shooter aims his gun at Gold’s head and appears to pull the trigger, but the gun apparently jams. The footage appears to show the shooter trying to fix the gun and again try to fire at Gold’s head, but the gun again appears not to fire. At this point, the suspect runs to his car and drives out of the frame.

Cain is wanted by New Orleans police on attempted murder, kidnapping and armed robbery charges.

A statement from the police department claims that Cain demanded cash from Gold before shooting him.

Cain grabbed the woman’s purse before fleeing, police say.

“EMS transported both victims to the hospital,” the police statement says. “The woman was treated for minor injuries and subsequently released. Gold remains in the hospital in critical condition.”

A $12,500 reward is being offered for any information that helps lead to Cain’s apprehension.
