Go Inside Shannan Gilbert’s Last Days and Mysterious Death with PEOPLE’s New Crime Show

Posted on

To so many people, Shannan Gilbert is only remembered for how she died: Alone, exposed, vulnerable and apparently fleeing danger on the outskirts of Gilgo Beach on Long Island, New York.

It was the police search in her disappearance that led to the discovery of at least 10 other bodies in the Gilgo Beach area, launching the hunt for a serial killer and forever tying her fate to theirs.

But Gilbert was more than that: And her life — full of promise, but with challenges and heartache — is reexamined in the series premiere Monday night of PEOPLE’s new true crime series, People Magazine Investigates, on Investigation Discovery.

Gilbert is not just a part of the Long Island Serial Killer case. She was a gifted high school student who graduated early. She wanted to be a singer. She moved closer to New York City and auditioned whenever she could. She had dreams.

Gilbert struggled, too: She began escorting to make money, and a romantic relationship with her escort driver soured and turned violent. Before her 25th birthday, she would be dead.
