Authorities have accused a Batavia, New York, woman of killing her daughter – and then living with the corpse for months.
Christina Colantonio, 28, was charged with second-degree murder after her infant daughter’s body was found inside her apartment, WGRZ reports.
Police said an acquaintance who was visiting the home discovered the girl’s body on Thursday and called 911.
Investigators believe that Colantonio killed the baby after she gave birth to her about three months ago. While they did not discuss the cause or manner of the infant’s death, Genesee County District Attorney Lawrence Friedman did say that investigators “have enough evidence to come to a conclusion it was intentionally caused.”
Colantonio entered a not guilty plea at her arraignment on Saturday and is being held in custody without bail, a spokesperson from Friedman’s office told PEOPLE. Her next court date is Thursday, the spokesperson said.
Police said that Colantonio lived with two other children, who were not home when investigators searched the apartment. It’s unclear where the children are now.
A neighbor told WIVB that Colantonio always seemed friendly. “She always waves,” David Zanghi, who lives across the street, said. “Very pleasant, extremely pleasant, very cordial young lady. This has me floored. I think it has the whole neighborhood floored.”
The case is eerily reminiscent of one involving an Ohio father who was arrested after his daughter’s body was found rotting in her crib. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of abusing a corpse and tampering with evidence.
