A 12-year-old Michigan boy accused of fatally stabbing a 9-year-old boy on a playground has pleaded not guilty to murder.
According to a court document filed Friday, the older boy did not know the victim, whom he allegedly stabbed repeatedly in the back on a playground in Western Michigan on Aug. 4. The victim died of his wounds later that night at a nearby hospital.
The 12-year-old told authorities that he’s “bad and always does stupid things.” He went on to say that he wanted to go to jail, The Grand Rapids Press reports.
The boy’s attorney Charles Boekeloo confirmed to PEOPLE that he entered a not-guilty plea for his client, but declined to comment further. He will request a mental health evaluation in order to find out if the boy is able to stand trial.
After allegedly stabbing the victim, the 12-year-old boy approached a neighbor and calmly called the police himself.
A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Aug. 13 in Kent County Family Court, but could be delayed by a psychiatric exam.
