Arizona authorities allege that a high school teacher had an affair with an underage student – and that his wife knew about the relationship and never reported it.
Brian Woolsey, 45, and his wife, Jennifer Woolsey, 38, were arrested on October 2, Isabel Wolfe, the Peoria, Arizona police department public information officer, tells PEOPLE.
According to Wolfe, Woolsey began seeing a female student in 2010. His relationship with that student, who is now 20, lasted for several years, Wolfe claims.
The alleged victim recently came forward to report the relationship to police.
Wolfe says that Woolsey’s wife, who is also a teacher, was arrested because she found out about the affair and failed to inform authorities.
“She had knowledge of the relationship pretty early on and did not report it,” says Wolfe. “Being a teacher, she was well aware of the ‘Duty to Report’ laws in Arizona,” which mandates teachers must contact police whenever they suspect a child is being abused.
Brian Woolsey faces charges of sexual conduct with a minor and sexual exploitation of a minor, while Jennifer is charged with failing to report sexual abuse.
The couple has yet to appear before a judge to answer to the charges. No one answered the phone at their home Monday. Computer records indicate neither teacher has retained counsel.
