A Marine was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a 20-year-old University of North Texas student on early New Years Day, PEOPLE confirms.
Cpl. Eric Jamal Johnson was taken into custody at Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona, Cpt. Justin Smith of the U.S. Marines tells PEOPLE. In the early morning hours of New Year’s Day, he allegedly shot and killed Sara Mutschlechner in Denton, Texas.
Early New Years Day, Mutschlechner was found lying by her car in Denton, Texas, shot in the head.
The sorority sister was brought to the local hospital where she was put on life support until later that evening when she was pronounced dead.
Mutschlechner was driving when, according to witnesses, a dark-colored SUV with five or six men allegedly drove up next to her and shot her. Her car then smashed into a utility pole.

Since the shooting, friends and family have paid their respects.
“She was friends with everyone,” Mutschlechner s mother, Gloria, told ABC News.
