A reality show producer’s marriage was on the rocks before his wife turned up dead in Mexico, friends say.

Bruce Beresford-Redman, an Emmy-nominated former producer of Survivor and Pimp My Ride, was temporarily detained by Mexican authorities and told to stay in the country while the investigation continues.

His wife, Los Angeles restaurant owner Monica Beresford-Redman, whose body was found Thursday in the sewer of a Cancun resort, died from a blow to the skull, according to autopsy results reported by CBS News.

“They seemed to be a happy couple, but they were having problems at the end,” Monica’s friend Lili Moulin tells PEOPLE. “Monica is a nice and happy person. She is, or she was, full of life.”

Authorities in Cancun say the couple were heard fighting in their hotel room the night before Monica disappeared, and that the husband had scratch marks on his face and arms when he was later questioned by police, according to the Associated Press.
