An Elk River, Minnesota, police officer and his son were shot and killed on Saturday evening in what officials are calling a “domestic situation.” The officer’s other son was arrested shortly afterwards in connection with the killings, though he had yet to be charged as of Sunday.
Officers received a call from a male at just after 7 p.m. saying that he had been shot. When they arrived on the scene they found Blake Besser, 27, dead in the kitchen and his father Todd Besser, 49, dead in the basement, both from apparent gunshot wounds, according to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
At shortly before 8 p.m., police received a call from 21-year-old Christopher Besser saying he wanted to turn himself in. Authorities picked him up at a local Kwik Stop gas station. He remains in custody.
“Todd was a fantastic person. Even-keel. He was a pleasure to work with,” Elk River Police Chief Ron Nierenhausen told KARE 11. “We used to talk all the time, we were similar ages and we both have military experiences and backgrounds. Todd was a rare individual.”
Meanwhile, neighbor Jeff Mastro told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the Bessers were “nice neighbors.”
“Everyone is shocked,” added Mastro’s wife, Erin.
