A Colorado mother was charged this week with pimping her 12-year-old daughter to an Australian man in exchange for cash, jewelry and a trip to Hawaii.
Julie Anne Greiner, 43, has been charged with human trafficking of a minor for sexual servitude; pimping of a child and sexual assault of a child/pattern of abuse, Pam Russell with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office tells PEOPLE. Greiner, who has yet to enter a plea, has a hearing scheduled for Oct. 20.
Authorities say Greiner knew about her daughter’s relationship with 23-year-old Thomas Keski, who the girl met in an online chat room in September of 2014. Keski allegedly wired Greiner thousands of dollars, some of which was used to pay rent and electricity bills. He also bought the girl expensive jewelry, electronics and sex toys.
The police were tipped off in January of 2015 when the Lakewood Police Department received a call from Greiner who claimed she feared for her safety because her adult son was angry with her, according to a police affidavit, obtained by FOX.
Police interviewed Greiner’s adult son who told police about his sister’s online relationship with Keski, who was sending “little gifts” to his sister like a necklace and money to his mother’s bank account.
He told police he believed the boy was much older after he saw his sister video chatting with him. He said he told his mother that he suspected Keski was older but his mother didn’t seem concerned. He said he badgered his mother until she finally admitted that Keski was his age, in his early 20s.
“The son told his mother she has to put her foot down and say no,” according to the affidavit. Greiner didn’t agree and said she “talked to Thomas and they were just friends helping each other out with a situation.”
The son told police he later searched his sister’s phone and found different sex chat apps in its search history. When he woke up his mother to show her, “she went back to sleep,” the document states.
The adult son told police that Keski had been sending his mother money, including $2,500 for rent and electricity. Keski also allegedly sent his sister an iPhone 6 at Christmas, a ring, a diamond necklace, and books.
Police say Keski and his mother, Merja, took Greiner and the girl to Hawaii for an all expense paid trip.
“Julie and Merja took the bedroom and they left the door to the adjoining room open,” the document states. Greiner first told police her daughter and Keski slept on the couches but “later admitted they both slept together on the pullout bed.”
According to the police affidavit, in a text message between Keski and the girl, she asks, “Do you think we’ll even be able to kiss in Hawaii?” He responded, “Of course, we can do anything, your mum just has to say we didn’t.”
Australian authorities arrested Keski on Oct. 8.
