Famed figure skater Nancy Kerrigan’s brother Mark is facing assault charges after an alleged altercation with their father, who died on Sunday, according to reports.

Daniel Kerrigan, 70, was found unresponsive at his Stoneham, Mass., home on Sunday morning, reports the Boston Globe. He was later pronounced dead at Winchester Hospital.

Mark Kerrigan, 45, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on an elderly person and causing serious bodily injury. A police report filed in court says the son attacked his father during an argument about whether he could use the phone.

Police said Monday that the younger Kerrigan has not been charged with murder. Cause of death is pending autopsy results.

A death notice for Daniel Kerrigan has since been published on

Nancy Kerrigan, 40, is best known for a brutal and bizarre incident in January 1994, when she was hit in the knee by a baton-wielding associate of rival skater Tonya Harding in a planned attack aimed at boosting Harding’s chances at the U.S. Championships.

Kerrigan was forced to withdraw from the event but was named to the 1994 U.S. Olympic team anyway, and ended up winning silver in Lillehammer.

Nancy and husband Jerry Solomon welcomed their third child in May 2008.
