Shakira had to cancel concert dates in Europe while she recovers from health issues. The Colombian singer, 40, who was fully devoted to her El Dorado World Tour, apologized to fans in two moving letters she recently shared on social media. Her first missive was addressed to her German fans after she was forced to cancel a concert in Cologne on Nov. 8. “During these last few days of rehearsals I have unfortunately strained my vocal chords and as a result, my doctors have ordered me to go on vocal rest to avoid any greater damage that could keep me from performing. I’m devastated,” she wrote, adding: “As much at it pains me, I know I need to heed the advice of my doctors and recover so I can give you all everything I’ve got once I’m on the road and not risk any further injury.”
She hoped to return to the stage on Nov. 10 in Paris, but her vocal health hadn’t improved enough: “For the last few days I’ve been very focused on recovery for my strained vocal chords. I really hoped to achieve this in time to be able to sing in Paris. However, and much to my chagrin, this hasn’t been possible and my doctors have advised me to continue on vocal rest for the time being,” she posted on Nov. 9. She canceled two concerts in the French capital, as well as shows on Nov. 12 in Antwerp and Nov. 14 in Amsterdam.
The singer assured fans that this mandatory break from performing hasn’t been easy for her. “I’m anxious to get back on stage and be at 100% for all of you,” her message continued. “Again, I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for all the support you’ve shown me these days and which has helped keep me afloat in what has been a difficult time. God willing we will see each other soon for the kickoff of my tour.”
Last November, the singer had to cancel appearances at the Latin Grammys and American Music Awards to take care of her son Sasha, who was sick. Although she did not reveal the nature of Sasha’s illness, she noted on Instagram that her baby made a full recovery: “Thanks for all the messages you sent for Sasha while he was sick,” she wrote. “Everything is under control now, and he’s back to his cheerful self!”
Hopefully, we can say the same for her very soon.
