After strutting the runway in lingerie for six Victoria’s Secret Fashion shows, Joan Smalls has just announced that she will be designing her own swimsuit and lingerie line. This news comes days after she revealed that she would be making her acting debut for a Netflix film titled Set It Up, which is set to release next year.
The Puerto-Rican model will be working with intimates line Smart & Sexy, which is sold at Walmart. Smalls has been the face of the brand, appearing in their 2017 ad campaigns, and now she will be taking on the role as a designer for her collection.
“I fell in love with the brand and the fact that they cater to women of all sizes at affordable pricing,” Smalls told Business of Fashion. “Ariela Balk really impressed me and I found a great admiration for her as a businesswoman. When it comes to design, we agree in many aspects and we both are super excited about the collaboration.”
Balk, CEO of Smart & Sexy, shared her excitement to work with the model, highlighting her understanding of fashion and its market. “She has a great eye for fashion. She understands that you have to make women of all kinds look pretty. She also shares the philosophy that you not only make a piece because it has been seen on the catwalk and now it is the fashion item of the moment.”

The brand’s collection is manufactured in the same factories as Victoria’s Secret, but can afford to sell at lower prices – less than $15 for a bra – because they distribute them in Walmart’s 4,000 stores, as Balk told Business of Fashion. “In some ways, our brand has been the best-kept secret,” she said.
Joan Smalls line with Smart & Sexy is set to release Spring 2018.
