Beyhive alert! Beyoncé might be teaming up with chart-topper Cardi B for a new song. The rapper’s engineer Michael Ashby, who worked with her on Billboard‘s Hot 100 hit “Bodak Yellow,” shared a photo of a file featuring the names of both artists and the word “demo.” “Wow this feature is big,” he teased.
The two artists have been popping up together in recent months. They met for the first time at the 2017 Made in America Festival in September, where they snapped a photo together. Cardi B shared the pic on Instagram with an effusive caption: “I met Beyoncé B—!!!!!!!!!!!!” The up-and-comer also performed at the “TIDAL X: Brooklyn” charity concert in New York City, which was organized by the Lemonade singer’s husband, JAY-Z.
Some speculate the song will be featured on Cardi’s next album, which drops this month. “I have an album coming. It will be dropping in October,” she told the Associated Press last month. “I’m a little nervous to put the project out, but I think it’s going to do pretty good.”
As news leaked of the pair’s possible collaboration, fans went wild…with disdain. The Beyhive wasn’t feeling it, arguing that Cardi B is not on equal footing with Queen Bey. “That’s a waste of Beyoncé time! I respect Cardi B accomplishments but is nowhere near on Bey level,” one user wrote on Twitter. Another took a harsher line, writing: “I’m praying Beyoncé doesn’t collaborate with Cardi B.”
It also seems that the ever-so-private Bey—who always releases her projects with a surprise factor—isn’t pleased with the leak. Ashby posted an apologize to the “Formation” singer, as well as her fans on Oct. 25th: “Public apology to Beyoncé and all her fans unfortunately ‘hot new hip-hop’ invaded (sic) my privacy. I cannot turn back the hands of time,” he continued, “so at least this a life lesson I’ve learned on my behalf and all I can do is move forward.”
Hopefully, Ashby’s misstep didn’t derail the project. Stay tuned!
