Despite their messy split, Usher says he has no regrets about marrying his ex-wife, Tameka Foster.
The singer explains how he lives his life to the fullest in the September issue of O Magazine (on newsstands now), and describes getting married at the age of 28 as his “best mistake.”
“Most people probably think I regret it because I ended up getting divorced, but it helped me learn that sometimes I think I know more than I actually do,” says Usher, now 35.
A bitter custody battle for their sons Usher V, 6, and Naviyd Ely, 5, followed – a fight complicated by the older boy’s near-drowning at his dad’s home a year after Foster’s 11-year-old son died in a jet ski accident. Usher won primary custody last summer.
Now, family is more important than ever for the former Voice coach.
He told the magazine that one of his favorite traditions with relatives is reunions, or what he calls “red-cup celebrations.”
“Everybody’s hanging out on the lawn, drinking out of those plastic cups, eating fried chicken and dancing to loud old-school music,” Usher says. “Sometimes the simpler the celebration, the better.”
