Does that ring any bells? If it doesn’t, that’s okay – not everyone is familiar with ’90s also-rans the Street Sharks. Created to cash in on the success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Street Sharks were a team of anthropomorphic sharks who fought crime. One of them wore rollerblades. They had an animated show and a line of toys.
But if you do remember the Street Sharks, you’re not alone. Do you know who else remembers them? Vin Diesel.
That’s because one of young Vin Diesel’s early gigs was being very enthusiastic about the line of Street Sharks toys at a 1994 toy fair. The video of this job/gig/performance/whatever you want to call it has surfaced, and it is … everything.
Diesel, wearing a leather vest, no shirt, and a shark’s tooth necklace, waxes rhapsodic about the line of Street Sharks toys, demonstrating their various selling points on a barrage of lesser toys, including, pointedly, some Ninja Turtles. Also he puts on a Street Shark hand puppet and beats up a velociraptor toy. (Not making this up.)
The road to stardom has some odd detours, but Diesel takes to this early gig with such gusto that it just adds a new dimension to our love for him. What a guy.
