Does your boyfriend always get you the same crappy floral arrangement every holiday? The guys at BloomNation are here to help. In 2010, Farbod Shoraka, David Daneshgar and Gregg Weisstein founded a business that allows shoppers to work with local florists to design the perfect bouquet for your boo.

“My girlfriend would text me the picture and I would be like, ‘What? That doesn’t look anything like what I sent,’ ” Daneshgar tells PEOPLE.

So how do you make you partner feel like a million bucks? The boys tell us the biggest mistakes guys make when buying flowers online – and how to fix them.

1. Ditch the Red Roses
They may be a V-Day staple, but roses are boring and way too expensive. “As a guy, the thing I found most marketed was a dozen roses, right?,” Daneshgar says. “But what’s interesting is the wholesalers – the ones selling the flowers to the florists – they have a surge in price just for roses because they know that’s when they can charge more.

“So what I do is get pink tulips. Because they look good but they don’t cost as much. I can send a unique arrangement that’s not the traditional red roses. And I get more for my money.”

2. Think Outside the Box
Literally. Too many guys don’t realize that when you send flowers, they come in a box, says Daneshgar. “That’s a classic horror story. Sending flowers and having your girlfriend have to cut them out of a box and put them in the vase. That’s not what you want to do on Valentine’s Day!” Instead, make sure to choose a florist who will deliver the flowers in a vase for you.

3. Plan Ahead (Way Ahead)
Preparation is key, says Weisstein. “Waiting for the last minute is never a good idea. You want to make sure you get your order in on time.

Adds Shoraka: “Oftentimes, florists stop selling flowers a day or two before Valentine’s Day. Guys like us, it would never occur to us to plan ahead of time. The reality is, though, if you don’t your girlfriend is only going to get the dregs.

Plan to order your flowers about 10 days out so that florists have enough time to prepare. “That day is their Super Bowl,” Shoraka says. “It’s the most hectic, insane day for them. By giving them some prep time, it can only make things better.”

4. When in Doubt, Leave It Up to the Florist
Don’t know what to get your girlfriend? Don’t just buy a bouquet at random, ask a florist!

“I recommend something called ‘designer’s choice.’ Sometimes, it’s best to leave it up to the florist,” says Daneshgar. “You can tell them what your girlfriend likes and they can tailor flowers to her personality.”

He adds: “Florists are experts in bringing out emotions. Let them work their magic!”

5. Don’t Skimp on the Card
Shoraka says a lot of guys just write “Happy Valentine’s Day” on a card and leave it at that. “That’s the moment to really think about how you want to express your emotion,” he says. “Make sure you write something very genuine and authentic.”
