Nearly two months after going very public with their romance, Tom Cruise pops the question to Katie Holmes at Paris's Eiffel Tower on June 17, 2005. A week after announcing their engagement, Cruise revs up his romance with his giddy bride-to-be at the premiere of his film, the Steven Spielberg-directed sci-fi adventure War of the Worlds, at Hollywood's Grauman's Chinese Theatre. "What Tom did on Oprah was exactly what Tom did with me when he first told me about Katie Holmes," Spielberg told PEOPLE, adding, "Tom lost his cool because he was deliriously happy."

The actress even sang for her man, serenading the movie star with the Righteous Brothers's "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," the version from Cruise's 1986 blockbuster Top Gun. "She's impressive," Cruise gushed, adding, "She inspires me."

"I'm so proud of her," Cruise said of his wife's Broadway debut in the revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons in September 2008. Of Cruise, Holmes told PEOPLE, "He comes [to the theater] a lot. He came to the dress rehearsal. I was so nervous, and I saw him out there, and he made me feel so much better. Everytime he's there, I just feel like it's going to be okay."
