Terri Irwin says she’s still adjusting to being a single parent after her husband, Crocodile Hunter star Steve Irwin, died in September.
“It’s extremely difficult,” Irwin, 42, told PEOPLE at Nickelodeon’s 20th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday. “Part of me is still waiting for the day that he walks through the door.”
She and Steve had two children, Bindi, 8, and Bob, 3, and Irwin says her husband is still very much a presence in their lives.
“We have so much footage of Steve and we watch it so it’s like we almost get to see him every day,” she said. “The kids and I have good days and bad, but you just deal with it as it comes.”
On Saturday, Bindi helped present Justin Timberlake with the favorite male singer honor at the awards show. While accepting the honor, Timberlake put his arm about her and said, “It’s an honor to be standing next to Bindi Irwin. This young lady will change the world,” to which she politely answered, “Thank you!”
Of being a mom, Irwin told PEOPLE, “Parenthood is a great equalizer. It doesn’t matter how famous you are – once you become a parent you are just like everyone else.”
Steve Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray barb while filming a documentary off the coast of Australia.
