How did we get here?
It’s only been a month-and-a-half since we learned that Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris broke up after 15 months of dating, and those happier times – like her cute shout out at the iHeartRadio Awards – seem oh-so-recent.
A lot can change in a few weeks, so let’s take a look back at what led up to Harris’ fired-up tweet spree on Wednesday.
June 1, 2016: Swift and Harris break up
About a week after Harris was hospitalized following a car accident, PEOPLE exclusively confirmed that his and Swift’s picture-perfect romance had come to an end after 15 months. A source close to the couple told PEOPLE that “there was no drama” surrounding the breakup and that “things just don’t work out sometimes. No one cheated.”
June 2, 2016: Why the split?
Of course, the question on everyone’s mind was, “Why did this beautiful romance come to an end?!”
A friend of Swift told PEOPLE the relationship ended because Harris was “intimidated” by her success.
“[Harris] said on multiple occasions that he was intimidated by Taylor, which is why he would not attend any events where she was being honored, or any award shows unless he was nominated,” the friend explained.
A source close to Harris – whom sources confirm ultimately ended the relationship – told PEOPLE that the breakup “wasn’t a shock” for Swift because the couple had ongoing issues. “They come from very different worlds,” the source said. “Taylor is used to being treated a certain way.”
The source also mentioned that the pair’s age difference was part of the problem, as Swift is 26 and Harris is 32. “Taylor somewhat lacks real-life experience,” the source concluded. “They will not be getting back together.”
June 2, 2016: It’s all good here
Things were over, but there was no bad blood – yet. In a week filled with various reports on the breakup, Calvin tweeted, “The only truth here is that a relationship came to an end & what remains is a huge amount of love and respect” – which Swift then retweeted.
A Harris insider told PEOPLE he still has high praise for Swift and “very much admires her as a person and what she has been able to do with her career. This is what drew him to her in the first place.”
“She works incredibly hard for things that she believes in,” the source said. “He always saw that as an amazing quality. They are still friendly.”
June 4, 2016: Swift surprises a fan at his wedding
Though Swift was currently riding solo, she was still more than happy to take part in her fan’s special day.
Not long after the split was announced, Swift made a planned surprise appearance at the wedding of a fan whose mom died before his nuptials. “There were lots of emotions entering [the wedding],” a guest told PEOPLE about Max Singer and Kenya Smith’s ceremony. “Of course there was sadness as well, and Taylor was able to really transform that sadness into a celebration.”
Swift sang her hit “Blank Space,” and joked, “I wanna talk about the fact that when I wrote this song, I never in my life imagined I would be performing it at a wedding.”
June 8, 2016: Swift is doing just fine
Days later, Swift was photographed leaving a New York City gym with a smile on her face. “Of course she’s sad about the breakup, but she’s leaning on her family and friends and looking forward,” said a Swift source. “She’ll be just fine.”
Childhood BFF Abigail Anderson also shared a sweet sentiment with Swift, with an Instagram photo of a card with the words, “My weird heart loves your weird heart.”
June 15, 2016: A new romance
No one knew what would come next, but no one expected this!
The relationship wasn’t just news to the fans. “He did not know Taylor and Tom were together,” a Harris source told PEOPLE. A friend also added that Harris “has moved on and is happy.”
June 15, 2016: The purge
At this point, things got kind of overwhelming. While we were all busy looking into everything there is to know about Swift’s new romance, both Swift and Harris wiped their social media accounts clean of one another.
Yep, really – nearly all evidence nearly of their beautiful vacations, romantic anniversary gifts and cute double dates were gone. All that was left was, well, the many screenshots fans took of the photos that will live in our camera rolls forever.
June 20, 2016: Hiddleston is shirtless
Sure, we weren’t sure what to think of the new relationship at first but then Hiddleston took his shirt off for W magazine, and we were sold.
June 24, 2016: And so is Harris
Following the breakup, Harris started putting in overtime at the gym – and we could see the hard work paying off. His pal Emil Nava oh-so-coincidentally posted a pic showing their group of guy friends posing like statues of Greek gods during what appeared to be a guys’ trip, too.
June 21, 2016: #Hiddleswift goes public
At this point, we realized Swift and Hiddleston weren’t just randomly making out on the beach – they were a full-blown couple. Public sightings of the new couple would not be a rare occurrence. In fact, we would be bombarded with sightings of Hiddleswift (or Tomlor – it’s up for debate) from every angle, and we would enjoy every moment of it.
Their first stop was the singer’s home in Nashville, of course, to support BFF Selena Gomez on her Revival tour. The two danced in the crowd with friends including Anderson, Swift’s brother Austin and country singerKelsey Ballerini.
June 24, 2016: Harris is doing fine, too
Harris might have shared his feelings about the breakup on social media with several now-deleted comments saying that he was “not sad at all” about the split – nor was he “jealous.” Instead, Harris said he felt “free.” (Although a source close to Harris denied he wrote the comments.)
When a commenter asked if he was sad, he allegedly replied, “I’ve reached a point of genuine curiosity I’m not sad at all I feel amazing right now.”
“I cared too much and then I didn’t care at all,” Harris reportedly told one fan, when asked why he followed Swift on social media again. “I am a real person remember.”
As for the reason behind their breakup, Harris reportedly claimed Swift “controlled the media and this situation,” and, “I had no idea what was going on. So that kind of makes it a lot worse from my perspective.”
June 24, 2016: The world tour begins
Nope, not the 1989 world tour – the Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston love tour of 2016.
Next stop? The romantic city of Rome, where they walked along the cobblestone streets hand-in-hand, gazed into one another’s eyes over lunch and kissed atop elevated locations.
June 28, 2016: Meanwhile, back home…
Harris wasn’t having the best month ever. He banged up the door of his SUV as he struggled to escape from photographers peppering him with questions. One photographer was heard to shout, “Who are you dating now?” Harris didn’t seem to be in any mood to answer and hurried into his car. When he put the vehicle into reverse for a swift departure, he neglected to realize that his rear door was still open, slamming it into a cement wall.
He later tweeted about the situation:
June 29, 2016: Party time
Things picked up later that week, when Harris traveled on a private yacht with a group of beautiful women in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He shared his day on Snapchat, posing with the girls in a photo captioned, “I write songs.”
July 3, 2016: Hiddleston is inducted into the squad
Swift held her annual 4th of July party at her Rhode Island home, but this year, Harris wasn’t invited. Instead, the man of the hour was Hiddleston, who seemed to have a blast with Swift and her friends.
They slid down a giant slide!
July 7, 2016: Off to Oz
Then Swift and Hiddleston headed off to Australia, because they’re a couple who lives to travel and we literally can’t keep up anymore. They’ve spent time together, (romantic meals) and time apart, with Hiddleston getting in some exercise and Swift visiting fans at a children’s hospital.
July 8, 2016: Olé!
Now, don’t you go thinking the Tayvin drama is over. Many thought Harris’s new breakup track, “Olé, was inspired by Swift’s new romance with Hiddleston.
The summery reggae jam from Harris and John Newman includes lyrics like, “I see online that you’ve begun to be a good girl and take trips with your boyfriend, being attentive / Continue to pretend,” which seem to follow Hiddleswift’s jet-setting romance.
However, a source tells PEOPLE Harris wrote it months ago – and at the time of the split, multiple sources told PEOPLE there was no cheating involved with either party.

July 13, 2016: The truth about that other song
Turns out, the reason Swift and Harris broke up in the first place may have been over his hit with Rihanna. “Taylor Swift wrote ‘This Is What You Came For’ under the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg,” Swift’s rep confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE.
TMZ had previously reported that Swift “wrote the song, sat down at a piano and did a demo into her iPhone,” which she then sent to Harris.
After recording a full demo, they agreed to keep the collaboration on the down low, but Swift was hurt after Harris did an interview and said he couldn’t foresee working with his then-girlfriend in the future. “You know, we haven’t even spoken about it. I can’t see it happening though,” Harris told Ryan Seacrest while promoting the song.
July 13, 2016: Well, that escalated quickly
Now here’s where things got really interesting. Later that same day, Harris responded to PEOPLE’s report about the song in a series of now-deleted tweets.
First, Harris paid Swift some compliments: “And she sings on a little bit of it too. Amazing lyric writer and she smashed it as usual.”
He expanded on the story a bit: “I wrote the music, produced the song, arranged it and cut the vocals though. And initially she wanted it kept secret, hence the pseudonym.”
But then things started getting real really real: “Hurtful to me at this point that her and her team would go so far out of their way to try and make ME look bad at this stage though.”
He talked about her new relationship: “I figure if you’re happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do.”
And even referenced her alleged long-running feud with Katy Perry (which neither woman has publicly commented on): “I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it.”
He basically said Swift has a great life, but to leave him out of it:
And left us with this parting thought:
Perry, for her part, replied wordlessly:
And then retweeted her own sentiment from May 2015:
July 17, 2016: The phone call
After Harris’ Twitter rant, things seemed chill for a few days for him, at least. Swift, however, had a lot more on her hands when Kim Kardashian West reignited their feud by sharing Snapchats of the phone call in which Swift allegedly approved Kanye West‘s “Famous” lyrics about her. In the song, he raps, “For all my Southside n—– that know me best / I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. I made that bitch famous.”
After that, Swift clapped back at the couple in an Instagram post, claiming the phone call was “secretly” recorded and that Kanye never told her the song would call her “that bitch.”
July 23, 2016: An unexpected squad
Soon after Kardashian West turned Swift’s world upside down (and prompted nearly everyone to speak out on the matter), where did we find her? Hanging out with Harris!
But that’s not all: Harris also recently shared a video of himself lip syncing to West and ScHoolboy Q’s song “THat Part,” making it clear who he was siding with.
That night, Calvin gave a shout-out to Lopez on Snapchat and Instagram, sharing a clip of the two dancing together and writing, “Happy birthday Jennifer Lopez, legendary icon – and your show in Vegas is next level.”
Kardashian West shared her own Snapchats that night, specifically one in which she raps along with West’s “Famous” (including the line about Swift herself).
July 23, 2016: Selena speaks out
Gomez also had a birthday to celebrate over the weekend (which Taylor, of course, observed on Instagram), but things took a personal turn during her concert. Just before performing her hit single “Kill ‘Em with Kindness,” she got emotional and said to the crowd, “The next song, before I go home, is a song that’s so important to me, because I get really frustrated. I get stupid sometimes. I say things that I don’t mean, or that come out wrong, just because I care so badly.”
She continued her message, perhaps alluding to the recent feuds Taylor has found herself in, or even the negative reaction from fans when she stepped in to defend her BFF. “But the thing is, at the end of the day, no war in anger was ever won,” she said, quoting her song. “I do know that deep down in my heart, that I have to believe that we can love each other and always be kind, no matter what it takes in us. I believe that we can do that, no matter what.”
Later that night, Gomez also posted a note on her Instagram reflecting on her performance.
“Tonight I felt extremely unauthentic, unconnected to both myself and my music. I’ve never really felt like my materials, wardrobe or a video could define me. I act on a moment and fear that something hasn’t happened. I’m stagnant, I stay still and don’t just sit with myself first and ask ‘Is this where I am, whole heartedly?’ I’ve always told the truth. I’m always true to my word, I’ve shown who I am but I need to rethink some areas of my life creatively and personally.”
She captioned the screenshot, “not being negative about anything I’ve done. I’m grateful for every single moment I get here – Indonesia you were LOUD and clearly inspiring. Love you so much.”
