Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards suffered a concussion in Fiji, a band spokeswoman said on Saturday, Reuters reports. The rocker is said to be recovering in a New Zealand hospital.

Band spokeswoman Fran Curtis has said that Richards was injured earlier this week and flown to New Zealand with his wife, Patti, for observation. Her statement Saturday did not comment on how he was injured – however local press is reporting that the rocker got hurt by falling out of a palm tree. One newspaper is also reporting that Richards fell off a Jet Ski.

New Zealand’s Sunday Star-Times quoted Dr. Uzzal Kanti Dhar, of Suva Private Hospital in Fiji, where Richards was first treated, as saying, “I understand he climbed a coconut tree and fell from the tree and got injured.”

Richards reportedly was airlifted to Auckland’s Ascot Hospital later on Thursday, though duty manager Steve Kirby refused to confirm early Sunday that Richards was a patient there, citing the hospital’s privacy policy.

This did not halt fans from gathering outside the hospital Sunday, and New Zealand’s TV3 reported that Richards’s wife arrived carrying clothes while a security guard carried in three guitar cases.

“Nobody likes falling from a height like that, but he’s never fallen from grace for me,” fan Dave Buchanan told TV3 News.

Earlier this month, the Stones finished a tour of Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand.
