During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday, Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara revealed their hilarious on-set antics while filming the upcoming movie Hot Pursuit – including an incident that landed Witherspoon in the hospital.
“We did a fight sequence – she’s tough man,” said Witherspoon, 39, before being goaded by Vergara to tell the whole story.
In the comedy, Witherspoon plays a police officer who will stop at nothing to protect Vergara, a federal witness in her protective custody.
“She went to the emergency room. I sent her to the emergency room,” said a smiling Vergara.
The costars revealed that the incident caused internal bleeding, and Witherspoon was worried her appendix had burst. “I push her and I push her, and I kept telling her, ‘I think I’m pushing you too hard,’ and she was like, ‘No do it real,’ ” said Vergara. After a visit to the emergency room it was revealed the Modern Family actress had apparently popped Witherspoon’s ovary.
Vergara, 42, also poked fun at Witherspoon’s attempt to speak her native tongue for the film. Despite knowing Spanish from high school, Vergara said the Wild actress’s skills were “horrible.”
“She wasn’t even nice about it. She was like, ‘This is terrible,’ ” Witherspoon with a laugh. “You sound terrible. And then we saw the whole movie and she goes, ‘You guys that speak Spanish because Spanish people, people think that’s so funny.’ ”
The fast-friends have been heavy on the PDA while promoting the movie, and even got a little handsy on the Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet back in January.
While on Ellen the costars also performed a scene from their faux-sitcom called The Three Sofias, where Witherspoon and DeGeneres showed off their impersonation chops by mimicking Vergara’s trademark accent.
Hot Pursuit hits theaters on May 8.
