Christian Slater was released without bail Tuesday afternoon after being arrested on misdemeanor third-degree sexual abuse charges that he groped the buttocks of an unidentified 52-year-old woman in the early hours of the morning on New York’s Upper East Side.
He did not enter a plea and is due back in Manhattan Criminal Court July 14.
Assistant District Attorney Vanessa Puzio tells the Associated Press that Slater, 35, cursed at the arresting officer and said as he was placed in a patrol car in handcuffs, “I didn’t do anything. I’m suing you and the police department.”
The alleged groping reportedly occurred during an argument Slater was having with a female companion. Witnesses told local TV news reporters that the confrontation sounded alcohol-fueled.
The actor’s rep tells New York’s Daily News: “The situation is the result of a misunderstanding. We are hopeful this will be resolved shortly.”
Slater was on Broadway Tuesday night, back in his role opposite Jessica Lange in The Glass Menagerie.
His previous brushes with the law include a 1989 arrest in West Hollywood after police said he led them on a wild drunk-driving chase; a 1994 arrest at JFK Airport for trying to carry a loaded gun onto a plane; and serving time in 1997 for assaulting his then-girlfriend and biting a police officer who tried to arrest him in Los Angeles.
