Just days ago, they were hobnobbing with Vice President Joe Biden, Slumdog Millionaire‘s composer, and Washington D.C.’s elite. Now a Virginia socialite couple is being investigated by the Secret Service for being perhaps history’s most successful gatecrashers.
Dressed in a tux and fancy sari and followed by a reality-show crew, Tareq and Michaele Salahi somehow managed to make it through Marine guards, Secret Service details and White House staff to rub elbows with some of the most powerful people in the world at President Barack Obama’s first state dinner, in honor of the Indian prime minister, on Tuesday.
The couple even managed to have their pictures taken with the vice president, Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, and some of the Marines who were supposed to have kept uninvited guests out.
According to reports, the pair – he a polo and wine enthusiast and she a former Redskins cheerleader-turned-wannabe reality star – breezed through metal detectors without raising an alarm. They also somehow slipped past security, who were armed with a list of the 320 guests who were actually invited. Then their names were announced to the party by a Marine, and before you know it the couple was having cocktails at the most rarefied group in the world. Not on the seating chart, they apparently didn’t stay to sit down for dinner.
A film crew working for the Bravo network were notified by the couple about their upcoming dinner – and believed they’d been legitimately invited. The crew followed the couple as they drove to the White House but didn’t attempt to go farther than that, The Washington Post reports.
According to reports, there is evidence the couple had been planning their party-crashing months in advance, and Michaele Salahi had been boasting about trying to get close to the Obamas on her Facebook page.
Experts say the pair could go to jail for trespassing and felonious misrepresentation, according to the Times of London.
On the couple’s Facebook page, their attorney, Paul W. Gardner, wrote: “My clients were cleared, by the White House, to be there. More information is forthcoming.” The Salahis are booked to appear on Larry King Live on Monday night.
